How To Get Involved in Your Community When You're New!

September 14, 2011 by Genevieve Concannon

Are you new to the area? Finding it hard to meet new people? Get out there and get active in your community! Meet new people and get to know your surrounding community through community action!

When I first moved here to Northern Virginia I only knew one person, my husband. Yeah. It was interesting. I’d lived in the same place my whole life, and my network of community, friends and family was thousands of miles away. I had to start from scratch, just like those of you who are moving to Northern Virginia and the DC Metro area. You don’t always want to hang out with the people who you work with all of the time, right? You’re there at work 90% of your life anyways. So, how do you find new people to  hang out with and meet new solid friends? Get out into your community and get involved in things you’re passionate about. That is why I started GreenDrinks Arlington with Marina Ospina. We wanted to bring together like minded people so we could chat about environmentally focused things with other professionals in a non-invasive and fun atmosphere. I also started volunteering with my community and now I serve on Nauck United’s board to help grow the communities shared vision. I branched out and started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia  and did a couple of build days with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia as well as coordinating with Arlington County to get some plantings done for the Park and Recreation department. I met some amazing people this way whom I now call some of my best friends in Northern Virginia. It took some time, but now I know them and we have shared interests, which is pretty darned important.

Here are some quick links for How to Meet People in Northern Virginia when you’ve just relocated here:

The Department of Parks , Recreation and Cultural Resources is looking for volunteers right now! Click on the link to see the complete list of volunteer opportunities with the County.

GreenDrinks Arlington is not the only Chapter of this international organization, but we’d love to see you out and about if you’re interested in sustainability and green topics!

Local chapters of garden societies would love to see you out and about at their monthly meetings!

Are you into cycling? Go on one of the many group cycling events put on by Revolution Cycles!

So what if you’re new to the area, take DC and the Northern Virginia area by storm! Plus, take a look at my relocation resources to get an idea of some things to do and get a feel for how to get around this place.
